Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832) was a German polymath, a person whose expertise includes a wide variety of subject matters. Author of numerous well-known poems and novels, Goethe is best known for his long poem Faust and is considered a genius of modern German literature. He had studied law and was also an accomplished artist, biologist and theoretical physicist.
